CERN, THE LARGEST LABORATORY OF PARTICLE PHYSICS IN THE WORLD

27 - 10 - 2017
The European Organization for Nuclear Research, commonly known as CERN, is the non-governmental organization that aims to study and analyze fundamental physics, the search for the origin and the basic components of the matter. Founded in 1954, on the Franco-Swiss border, CERN was one of the first European joint laboratories and has currently more than 20 member states that collaborate and research together in the field of physics.

The investigations and experiments are carried out through the group of particle accelerators that CERN lodges inside its facilities. Among them is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the largest particle accelerator in the world. Initially the electrons are extracted from hydrogen atoms, leaving positive protons, and are introduced in a linear accelerator where they accelerate at a speed similar to that of light.

The proton beam passes to a propulsion ring, the Proton Synchrotron (PS), where they accelerate further, and subsequently enters the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), the last ring before reaching the Great Collider. It will be here where the proton beam divides in different directions and after the collision of the protons the conditions that existed a trillionth of a second after the Big Bang are recreated.

A large facility created with the ultimate goal of discovering, in a new filed of physics, the origin of matter, dark matter, extra dimensions, among other studies and experiments.

Procon Systems is currently developing the People Protection System (PPS) of the SPS complex, which protects against the risks generated in abovementioned installation. It includes software development and the production of specific hardware components.
The SPS PPS will provide two different and complementary functionalities: a conventional access control and a security lock. The access control equipment will be installed at all SPS access points and in areas around the SPS experiments. A physical barrier will be guaranteed and access will be controlled through automatic or remotely controlled security gateways and doors for personnel and material. The access control functions will include the identification, authorization verification and biometric authentication of the users.

In addition, Procon Systems also participates in other projects related to ventilation systems, such as in the new building B107, where the entire control and power distribution systems has been designed, manufactured and being commissioned.
