Predictive maintenance of refrigeration systems in collaboration with CERN

19 - 10 - 2020

This July, PROCON SYSTEMS has launched a new data science project in collaboration with CERN.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research, commonly known as CERN, is an Intergovernmental Organisation that focuses on the study and analysis of fundamental physics, the search for the origins of the universe and the basic components of matter. Founded in 1954, on the Franco-Swiss border, CERN was one of the first European joint laboratories and has currently more than 20 member states that collaborate and research together in the field of physics.

Research and experiments are carried out through CERN’s unique range of particle accelerator facilities. These include the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest particle accelerator.

The necessary and complex cooling systems of the LHC are located both on the surface, at certain points on the LHC, and along the ~ 27km LHC tunnel.

This new project comprises the realization of a prototype for maintenance planning of one of the subsystems of this complex cooling system based on the use of predictive algorithms.

The long-term goal is to have a fully operational product that significantly reduces the cost of maintenance interventions by optimizing the frequency of those interventions based on actual sensor data.

This collaboration is part of the Procon Systems R&D project for the development of a SW ecosystem for the traceability of industrial processes, which targets the new trends of Industry 4.0.

This project is co-funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through CDTI.
